No unless you want to claim a rebate. A referral is not needed to get started if you wish to pay the full fee privately.

A MHTP or mental health treatment plan is a type of referral written by a doctor that entitles a patient to Medicare rebates on psychology sessions. A MHTP allows patients’ to access 6 psychological therapy sessions subsidised by Medicare. After a patient has used these sessions, they can then visit their GP to obtain a MHTP Review, allowing them to access an additional 4 subsidised sessions. Patients are entitled to receive a total of up to 10 subsidised sessions in a calendar year.

Everyone’s therapeutic journey is different. The number and frequency of sessions will depend on your individual needs, the complexity of the concerns you bring, your past experiences with treatment, the support you have around you, and your current coping strategies. At Growing Souls Psychology, our psychologists are skilled in offering both short-term and long-term support. They’ll work with you to create a personalised treatment plan that fits your goals and circumstances.

The cost of a therapy session is $220. You may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, which will significantly reduce your personal cost.

Some private health funds offer rebates for psychological services. We recommend checking with your individual provider to see if your extras cover includes psychology and how much you can claim. If you're eligible, you may choose to use either your private health insurance or a Medicare rebate to help cover the cost of each session. Please note that only one type of rebate can be used per appointment.

Yes, reports and letters can be written for existing clients. You can request a psychological report or letter from your treating practitioner depending on your needs.
Report/letter writing that takes less than 15 minutes is free. Letters/report writing that takes more than 15 minutes are charged per our hourly rate of $220.

At Growing Souls Psychology, we follow the National Privacy Principles to ensure your information is kept safe and confidential. What you share in your sessions stays between you and your psychologist, unless you give written permission for it to be shared.
We take your privacy seriously and are committed to protecting your personal information. Your psychologist will also explain any legal or ethical limits to confidentiality during your first session.

You are welcome to cancel or reschedule your appointment up to 48 hours prior to your session time.
48 business hours or less will incur a 50% cancellation fee.
Same day cancellations result in the full fee being charged.
